REVIEW

Braveheart (ENGLISH)

Braveheart (James Horner). One of the James Horner's best scores, and the one that opened him the way towards the obtaining of 2 Oscar awards for his 1997 score for his work in Titanic, was Braveheart. And it was because it turned into the favorite soundtrack of James Cameron, the director of Titanic, with whom the composer had broken ties from the bad environment created in 1986 during Aliens's postproduction.

The first album was published in 1995 with a few generous 78 minutes of duration. The complementary album published two years later than the first one comes to complete the musical panorama of the movie. Though it was late a bit in being released, the success of the first soundtrack was making possible the edition of the second album. Nevertheless, we don't know why, for the complementary albums, the idea of mixing the music with the most significant parts of the dialog of the movie is promoted. We understand that the fan who bought the first soundtrack and wants to repeat buying the second one is not interested by no means in the dialogs of the movie, for what, in our view, these hinder more than they please, and gives the sensation that the record label was thinking that the second album was remaining short opposite to the fan expectations and decided to introduce these dialogs as complement and supposed added value to the soundtrack. A mistake under our opinion. If we add to this the tracks of traditional music (that do not appear in the film) included for free "to keep the spirit of William Wallace", we find an album with minor music. Under this point of view, and for the fan that looks for more Horner's music, it is a dispensable album.

Due to the extensive quantity of music already published in the previous editions, the 2015 compilation, though it only adds 8 minutes of previously unreleased music, is a worthy work for a great soundtrack. The proper Horner could approve this compilation weeks before his tragic death in plane accident, which grants a bonus of verisimilitude being a compilation checked by the composer and not a posthumous work.

Apart from the score of the movie, several alternate versions are included, as well as 3 tracks present in the original album; all of them commented one by one inside the booklet that includes comments of the proper director/star, Mel Gibson. In short, a good compilation, listed in chronological order, with some extra tracks, and with a booklet with extensive information of the one that, for many people, is the best soundtrack of James Horner.

Braveheart (ESPAÑOL)

Braveheart (James Horner).
