REVIEW

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (ENGLISH)

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (John Williams). After the success of the film Jaws in 1975, two years later, the Spielberg / Williams couple triumphed again with one of the franchise works of contact with extraterrestrials. Posed as an intrigue rather than a pure science fiction film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind tells the obsession of its protagonist, Roy Neary, with replicating the image of the mountain that had been created in his mind after his first nocturnal contact with the extraterrestrials. Roy's obsession makes him lose his family and embark on a trip to the mountain once he can identify it after watching it on television. Once near the mysterious place, Roy contacts with more people who have experienced his same vision, and who also try to reach that place to satisfy their infinite curiosity.

Contemporary of the score of Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a soundtrack so significant in the trajectory of John Williams as hard to hear, in the musical antipodes of the film that started the galactic saga. The score was developed by squeezing to the maximum the obtuse and dissonant sonority of the orchestra, with continuous sound effects especially shown through the strings and metals, which fill the atmosphere with an almost permanent tension, and with very few minutes of authentic melodies. Beyond the famous five notes that serve as a linguistic bridge with the extraterrestrials (and whose track, The Dialogue, was one of the most important interactions of diegetic music on the plot in the history of cinema), no theme of the soundtrack is easily remembered. While it is true that the effectiveness of the same one in front of the image is absolute.

Originally released in the year of the film's premiere, 1977, the soundtrack received its first major expansion by Arista Records in 1998, reaching a length of 77 long minutes. In 2017, La-La Land Records reissued the soundtrack to mark the 40th anniversary of the film. Despite being a long 2-disc edition, the musical content hardly adds anything new to what has already been published in previous editions, and its best endorsement is the remastered sound and the booklet with ample information that enriches the sound experience as La-La Land always manages to do. Musically, one of the most interesting moments is The Dialogue (Early Version), a previous version of the famous dialogue with the alien ship from that was definitely included in the final montage.
