REVIEW

Planet of the Apes (ENGLISH)

Planet of the Apes (Danny Elfman). The expanded edition of the score of Tim Burton's version of Planet of the Apes contributes enough extra music with regard to the original version released in 2001.

In addition, a good part of the duration of disc 2 includes alternative versions, which there are understood that have been placed under the label of "bonus tracks", though other tracks of diegetic music featured in the movie (the source music) are also labelled as bonus tracks. If they are Elfman's compositions, they form a part of the music of the movie, for what we would not identify them exactly as "padding "tracks, since they are original compositions, which appear in the movie and which do not have another version already listened along the disc. In any case, the diegetic music is always welcome in a compilation of this style.

On the other hand, in spite of the fact that La La Land is, indisputably, the best label at the moment of presenting complete scores, so much for the importance of movies and composers, as for the abundant music that their releases include, as well as for the quantity of information that always accompanies on the complete and expanded editions, sometimes they commit the "mistake" of including an extra disc with the soundtrack as it was originally released. It is what it happens in Planet of the Apes, when includes the original soundtrack on disc 3, as a complement to the expanded score of discs 1 and 2. What is the motive to include the original score as an extra of this edition if already the first two discs include the expanded version of the original soundtrack? Why would listener like to listen to the original soundtrack (disc 3) after having listened to the same tracks in extended format before? We want to think that, on having treated itself about an expanded score and not a complete score, the music of the original 2001 edition still includes music that has not met reflected in the abundant compilation that the discs 1 and 2 offer. But, even this way, it seems to be illogical for presents the same music 2 times. And with 2 previous discs with 75 and 78 minutes of music respectively, that is to say, almost all of the disc durtation, there does not seem to be necessary the incorporation of the third disc under the argument that the edition could seem to be poor and scanty. Another motive to the incorporation of this third disc could be of raising the price of the edition at the cost of offering repeated content.

On the other hand, in 2011, Warner edited a special box set under the name The Danny Elfman & Tim Burton 25th Anniversary Music Box, which was including 16 discs with the Elfman's soundtracks for Tim Burton's movies throughout last 25 years, a box set for the very fans of the artistic couple, and that, in case of the disc of Planet of the Apes, was including 5 extra tracks with regard to the original 2001 edition, but that the La La Land 2012 edition left clearly short.
