REVIEW

Raiders of the Lost Ark (ENGLISH)

Raiders of the Lost Ark (John Williams). The adventure par excellence came in 1981 from the hand of George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and John Williams, in half of one of the most creative moments of the three filmmakers. The combination could only be perfect.

The first chapter of the Indiana Jones' adventures had all the ingredients to turn into a great success: an adventurous archeologist, trips through different places of the world (from the jungles of Peru, passing for the mountains of Nepal and the sands of Cairo), archaeological ancient secrets and Nazis. And it is that, from the initial sequence in the idol temple, the spectator remains caught by the story of the personage, fleeing from the traps and of the giant ball that rolls after the steps of the intrepid archeologist, in the mythical scene.

In what to music it refers, in those days, John Williams was already composed successes as Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Superman. And once again, he created the themes for a character as particular as Indiana Jones that are film history. The original album with 9 tracks and 41 minutes edited in 1981 was extended generously in 1995, where, curiously, the limited edition in vinyl was reaching 6 minutes extra with regard to the CD edition from the same label (DCC Compact Classics). The vinyl was containing a widespread version of the track The Well of Souls, that was corresponding with the content of Uncovering the Ark / Marion Into the Pit. Apart from the main theme tied to the character of Indiana Jones, Flight to Cairo, The Basket Game, The Map Room: Dawn or Marion's Theme are secondary themes that round the musicality of the archaeological adventure in search of the lost ark.

The 1995 album included, in addition, an extensive booklet with information about each track, besides numerous comments of the proper composer arranged along the booklet pages in the way of original quotations.

In 2008 there is released the extensive collection of 5 discs INDIANA JONES: THE SOUNDTRACKS COLLECTION, which was including the soundtracks of the 3 classic episodes with contents never before edited, the soundtrack of the fourth part as it was released a few months before with the premiere of the movie, besides a fifth disc with more tracks of the first three movies and a compilation of interviews of John Williams, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. In spite of being an ambitious compilation, and adding a general booklet, besides other one for each of the separately albums, these contain many images, but only a couple of notes from Steven Spielberg and the soundtrack producer, which turns out to be very scanty, since we all have seen the photos, but is the detailed information the one that finally gives value to a compilation of this style. That the content of the disc 5 had inserted between the tracks of the three first ones had been also desirable, to possess a correct chronology, though it is true that, due to the high footage of every disc, they had not fitted in the CD format.

In the extensive 2008 compilation, the track Desert Chase is incomplete, a surprising thing when it was complete in the 1995 edition. In addition, Marion Into The Pit was just included in the 1995 vinyl edition, and the track Indy Rides The Statue is an alternate version to which finally was used in the film and which does not appear in the compilation. The three discs of this collection of the first three movies were also released separately.

In any case, only by the abundant and new footage, the booklets of every movie and the elegant presentation of the box, the collection of the 4 soundtracks is very grateful for the fan of the Indiana Jones' soundtracks.
