REVIEW

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (ENGLISH)

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (James Horner). Due that fresh blood was looked for the composition of the music of Star Trek II, and due to the low budget that the sequel of Star Trek: The Motion Picture had compared with its predecessor one, the option to contract a classic composer was dismissed for the first reason, and to Jerry Goldsmith, composer of the first part of the saga, by the second one. It was necessary to search a new composer. This was the great opportunity for an almost unknown James Horner to compose music for a movie dedicated to the general public, as well as to allow him to do a brief cameo during the sequence of the battle in the Mutara Nebula. The great success of the soundtrack positioned him like an A-list composer.

Atlantic Records commercialized the LP of the soundtrack in 1982. In 1991, GNP Crescendo re-edited the album in CD with identical content. In 2009, Retrograde Records / FSM released the expanded edition with a wide booklet, which was including comments of the movie, of the music, from the director and from the composer, besides to include a track-by-track detailed analysis.

In the musical aspect, it turns to be a correct soundtrack, which fulfills well its assignment, renewing Star Trek's sound towards the style of the science fiction that James Horner impregnated in his scores at the beginning of the 80s, together with titles like Battle Beyond the Stars, Krull and the third part of the Star Trek saga. Though it is not one of his better works, and being far from the originality and impact of Jerry Goldsmith's score for the first movie, it is a score well valued by the fans of the composer, probably well influenced by the trekkie component.

In January, 2016, on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Star Trek franchise, Mondo re-edits the score in vinyl format, remastered, with identical musical content to the 2009 expanded edition and with special artwork, liner notes and covers.
