Star Trek: The Motion Picture (ENGLISH)

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Jerry Goldsmith). The score that Jerry Goldsmith created in 1979 to start the Star Trek sci-fi saga is one of the indispensable classics of this genre. With the previous and very close work of John Williams in Star Wars realized only two years before, the comparative and rivalries between both sagas have always appeared. And the music did not remain external to this debate. Goldsmith created a spectacular score, with enormous merit due to many time problems that forced the composer and orchestra to record versions of themes already previously recorded, to make useful the time of recording study, before the inability to have more movie material which to work with, in view of the great delay that was accumulating the montage of the movie.

The original 1979 album included 40 minutes of music distributed in 9 tracks. It was not up to twenty years later when the 20th Anniversary Edition offered an album worthy of the importance of Goldsmith's music for this saga and for the film history. The edition was released in a holographic slipcase and it has 2 discs, the first one with the extended score up to 74 minutes, and, the second one, with audio interviews of Gene Roddenberry and cast and crew members of the film. These interviews were originally published in 1976 and here they are presented extended. This content seems to be distant to be an attraction for the people who acquires the soundtrack for Goldsmith's music, and if the comments are not focused on the same one, it turns out to be rather a landfill only valuable for the true devoted of the film and the saga. These interviews are a content for the extras of the DVD / Blu-ray edition of the movie more than for the soundtrack.

In 2012, La La Land Records commercialized a great edition of 3 discs, all music and obviating the spoken content of the 1999 edition. The compilation included the extended score, alternate tracks, the original 1979 album and some additional tracks more. And with the complete booklet that includes, it does of this compilation one of the best editions published by the record label. The cover art has been kept opposite to the change that this label use to do in the expanded soundtracks that it publishes, which seems to give an idea of the deep-rooted that is the art of the original movie poster in the popular culture as the label has preferred to keep it.

In 2017, La-La Land Records reissues again the soundtrack, this time in vinyl format:
