REVIEW

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (ENGLISH)

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Howard Shore). As it happened with The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers was released in 2002 in two formats: the standard edition of 19 tracks, and the limited edition, in which a bonus track was included. One year later, in 2003, the standard edition would appear in the trilogy box together with the soundtracks of The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King.

Later, in 2006, The Two Towers: The Complete Recordings was released, continuing with the excellent packaging realized for the soundtrack of The Fellowship of the Ring one year before. The Two Towers: The Complete Recordings includes the extended score of the movie, besides great and detailed extra information. In the same way as it was edited for its predecessor, The Complete Recordings contributes the music in 3CDs and a DVD Audio with the whole score in high quality, with Dolby Digital Sound in Surround and Stereo formats at Advanced Resolution (48 kHz/24-bit).

On the information of the extensive booklet, this time the analysis of the themes composed by Howard Shore begin with Sméagol/Gollum, character who acquires a raised importance in this second part of the trilogy. The themes composed for Gollum comes to their climax with Gollum's Song (disc 3, track 14), the theme with that the movie finishes, a vocal track that leaves the sensations of sadness, of unfinished story, and with that there seems to be understood that Gollum's presence is going to be important in the story that is for been telling in the conclusion of The Return of the King. The analysis of melodies continues with some already presented in The Fellowship of the Ring and that continue developing in The Two Towers, as the different melodies associated with the One Ring, the Shire and the Hobbits. Other analyzed thematic melodies are the relating to the Elves, the Dwarves, the cities of the Men, Gondor and Rohan, Éowyn (the sister of the king Théoden of Rohan) who also possesses her particular melodic phrase, The Fellowship of the Ring, the gigantic monster Mûmakil, Isengard and the Orcs, Gríma Wormtongue, Mordor/Sauron, the Ents (the trees speakers inhabitants of Fangorn's Forest) and the Nature (that demonstrates its maximum expression of resistance in the march of the Ents towards Isengard).

The booklet finishes with mentions to the performers (orchestra, soloists and vocalists), as well as to several instruments identified each one with certain characters or places of the plot of The Two Towers.

As it happened in the edition of The Fellowship of the Ring, the web site of the soundtrack includes The Annotated Score, a free download document with a track by track analysis, besides the texts of the sung passages in the different languages developed by Tolkien for the Middle-Earth (as Adûnaic, Quenya, Sindarin and Old English) and translated into English. In addition, it includes more information about the orchestra, the soloists, the vocalists and the used instruments. The previous images correspond to some of the pages of the mentioned document.

The Two Towers: The Complete Recordings continues the philosophy that initiated the complete edition of The Fellowship of the Ring in 2005, a lot of music and a lot of information. Indispensable for the fan of the film music, of Tolkien and of the music created by Howard Shore for The Lord of the Rings.
